Sickness Protection can be better described as Income Protection, you pay money to an insurer for a policy that will guarantee a level of income should you become ill, injured or disabled. This can be broken down further. Income Protection can be split into three basic catagories, Permanent Health Insurance (PHI), Critical Illness Insurance and Mortgage Protection Insurance.
| More Information |
Insurance Policies that cover critical illness are designed to pay out a lump sum in the event that you are diagnosed with a specified illness such as terminal heart condition, cancer, motor neurone disease, kidney failure, stroke, multiple sclerosis, etc. You receive an agreed sum either when the illness is first diagnosed or in the event of death.

Permanent Health Insurance is also known as 'income protection' and 'income replacement' and provides a tax free income if the policy holder becomes unable to work through illness. An income is paid until retirement age or until the policy holder is able to return to work. PHI pays you a tax-free income, usually roughly equal to 60% of your earnings at the time of disability, less anything you receive from the State or a former employee scheme.

Mortgage protection ensures that if you become unemployed or disabled through an accident or sickness so that you become unable to work, your mortgage payments (or part of your mortgage payments) are paid for on your behalf.

To confuse matters more, many of the above forms of protection are available as 'stand-alone policies' or as 'add-ons' to products, Life Assurance in it's many incarnations is probably the best known. Some policies also have their own protection 'built-in'. To try to help in clarifying matters and because so many of these policies are linked we have included sections describing Life Assurance, Term Assurance and Whole of Life Cover. For more information, please click on the links below.
Also included is a glossary which should help you to understand many of the commonly used terms, and a section devoted to the pro's and con's of using an insurance company or a broker.
Good luck in your search, please remember to be careful when choosing your policy. Don't sign unless you are sure you understand exactly what the policy gives you and whether it suits your needs. Check out our Policy Guidelines page for some helpful and essential advice.
